Renlar cursed loudly as he made his way toward Vacinne. She sat on her knees on the cold stone floor nearly overtaken by exhaustion, her spirit well spent. Renlar limped to her, his damaged arm dangling uselessly to his side his face covered with bruises and his left eye beginning to swell. He fell to his knees at her side.
âAre you all right?â he demanded, his voice full of worry.
She winced as she turned toward him. âBetter than you.â
His good hand reached out and grasped hers. His breath was ragged, not unlike her own. He tried to catch his balance, but with only one good arm he toppled over, falling halfway onto her lap, halfway onto the floor. He did everything he could to keep his bad arm from slamming into the floor, only to fail miserably. He cried out in agony. Vacinne clutched Renlar who lay in her lap. âHow bad is it?â
âBroken, in multiple places I think,â said Renlar with a grimace.
Vacinne scanned the room around them. Her eyes first went to the corpses. Then they shifted to the nearly fifty unhatched eggs. Sheâd completely forgotten about them during the battle. The mottled black and green eggs were covered in slime and they had to be about to hatch. They had to hurry.
She looked down to Renlar. âI think I can heal the bones, but the swelling and the pain wonât be gone right away. It will take a while for your strength to return.â
Renlar nodded. She reached her hands out and placed them as gently as possible on his damaged arm and shoulder. He winced in pain at even the slightest touch.
âSorry,â she said before turning her concentration to the task at hand. She called upon the healing power of the Light. Heat flowed through her body, and down into her hands. They became hot as power coursed through them. The power left her skin and entered his arm and shoulder.
Renlar sighed as a small wave of relief washed over him.
âHowâs that?â she asked.
âHurts like Hell, but I think youâve managed to take the edge off it,â said Renlar as he tried to sit up.
Sharp pain shot through him at the movement. He cried out in pain. He thought better of it and allowed himself to rest back upon her knees.
Vacinne nodded, âThe bones are set and mending, but youâll need to give the magic time to heal you. Weâre going to need to make you a sling and get you out of here before things get worse.â
Renlar stared at her dazzling blue eyes and the smooth features of her face. His mind wandered.
Do you have any idea how beautiful you are?
âRenlar...â
âUh, huh?â he said, realizing sheâd been speaking to him.
âThose eggs are about to hatch, and you are in no condition to fight a horde of demons. We need to move,â she said, her voice urgent.
âOh, right,â he said as he tried to sit up again.
The pain lashed out at him, but it was less this time and he was able to at least sit upright.
